A fine civil war era Remington New Model 1858, Army .44 calibre 6 shot Percussion Revolver. Circa 1863-1875. The 8 inch barrel stamped on top with Patented Sept.14 1858. E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, New York U.S.A. New Model. Government inspector marks on the left wooden grip. These great revolvers were manufactured by Remington and were the major competition to Samuel Colt's model 1860 Army Revolver. Almost the whole production were ordered for the various U.S. Government contracts placed during the American Civil War. During the Civil War William Cody (Buffalo Bill) served as a dispatch bearer and scout for the Union Army. After the war he hunted buffalo to help feed the thousands of hungry men who built the Kansas Pacific Railroad. It was his phenomenal skill in this job that earned him the legendary nickname “Buffalo Bill”. As Chief of Scouts for the U.S. Army’s Fifth Cavalry from the late 1860s to early 1870s, Buffalo Bill participated in reportedly 16 battles earning recognition for “extraordinarily good services as a tracker and fighter in the pursuit of hostile Indians” and receiving the Congressional Medal of Honour in 1872. A few years later following the massacre of Custer’s Seventh Cavalry at the Battle of Little Big Horn, Buffalo Bill served as a scout once more joining in battle against the Cheyenne at Warbonnet Creek. It was during the Indian wars that William F Cody (Buffalo Bill) carried a Remington revolver and he was know to have said about his Remington "it never failed me". Nice crisp action with a strong spring. In good condition retaining much of it's original finish. Some minor dings and scratches. A good example of a civil war era Remington percussion revolver. Ref 3859.
