A scarce approx .62 calibre double barrelled percussion HOWDAH pistol by Lowe of Chester. Originally made as a flintlock circa 1790-1800, converted to percussion circa 1834. Thomas Lowe had a workshop on Northgate Street Chester circa 1792-1834. The locks both fitted with sliding safeties and engraved with the gun-makers name LOWE. The 6 inch barrels engraved on top with CHESTER. Finely chequered grips with silver oblong escutcheon. The term howdah pistol comes from the howdah, a large wooden platform and basket mounted on the back of an elephant. Hunters, particularly the British Raj in India, used howdahs as a platform for hunting and carried large-calibre side-arms for protection against close quarters animal attacks. The practice of hunting from the howdah basket on top of an Asian elephant was first made popular by the East India Company during the 1790s. Although howdah pistols were originally for emergency defence against dangerous animals in Africa and India, British officers later carried them for personal protection and even battlefield use. Actions in good working order, the nipples both damaged. In good well used condition showing some signs of use. Overall length 12 inches. Ref 4385.
