A scarce Danish (Danmark) Military Model 1772 Heavy Dragoon Flintlock Holster Pistol. This is the classic large Flintlock military pistol which served both the Danish Army's Dragoons and Denmark's Navy from it's adoption in 1772 and throughout the Napoleonic Wars when Denmark took the side of the French. Denmark was effectively eliminated as a fighting force by the British Naval forces at the Naval Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. This was the Battle when Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson ignored the order to withdraw from his commanding Admiral Sir Hyde Parker by putting his telescope to his "Blind eye" saying "I see no signal". He then went onto to completely decimate both the Danish and Norwegian fleet. The Battle of Copenhagen has always been regarded as Nelson's hardest battle. This pattern military pistol is also documented as being carried during the American War of Independence c.1775-1783. The breech marked with ENCY 21. Just before the trigger guard the letters ECN are stamped in the brass. Very heavy brass military style butt cap, trigger-guard, side-plate, end cap and ramrod pipes. The two brass ramrod pipes secure its correct steel ramrod. Overall length 20 inches. Old crack through the rear of the trigger guard, some minor very old holes around the lock and stock, otherwise in good working order and condition showing some signs of genuine use. A scarce Napoleonic era pistol. Ref 9534.
