A rare Basket Hilt sword made for Highland Regiments circa 1757-1784. Single edged blade 31 inches stamped with a Crown, "G.R. DRURY" on both sides. The sword maker Drury is recorded as having had a workshop in Wood street, London and later at 32 Strand, London. Correct wood grip showing some wear and good patina to the wood. Typical conical iron pommel stamped with a "2". Very good condition. Overall length 38 inches. This maker is known to have supplied weapons for use during the era of the American Revolutionary War 1775-1783. (For a similar sword please see "History of weapons of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. plate s12).
