A very good quality English Flintlock Box-lock pistol made by KNUBLEY of LONDON Circa 1785-1790 with a screw-off barrel & folding trigger. The side-plates are very finely engraved and inlaid in silver with the makers name KNUBLEY on one side and CHARING CROSS LONDON on the other side. Listed as a sword cutler and gun maker, 11 Charring Cross circa 1786-93, 7 Charring Cross circa 1794. Listed as Gun maker to the Prince of Wales, Duke of Clarence and Prince Edward, also contractor to the Ordnance, making cannon locks, trade muskets, pistols and broadswords
circa 1790-94.

Flat sided walnut butt. Screw-off steel barrel with lug to the underside, sliding top safety, two London proof marks stamped to the breech. The grip inset to the rear with an oval silver escutcheon engraved with a Ducal coronet and the initial I. Good overall condition. Action in working order. Overall length 6.5 inches. Very good condition. A scarce maker. This is the type of pistol that would have been carried in a pocket or a saddle bag during the late 18th century by an English gentleman, traveller, or officer as a personal protection weapon. The silver inlay and Ducal coronet indicates that this was made for an important person. Ref 9980.
