X X X SOLD X X X Cavalry sabre carried by Major Bridger 12th L D at Waterloo in 1815. Ref 1213.
A rare and unique Napoleonic era British cavalry sabre that has been fully identified and was carried at the battle of Waterloo by Major J. P. Bridger who was second in command of the 12th Light Dragoons during the famous battle of Waterloo. The single - edged pipe-back blade etched with the original owners name, rank and regiment in a small panel - J. P. Bridger, Major 12th L. D. - James Paul Bridger was born in Brighton in 1764 and began his service in 1793. He served in Egypt in 1801 and at Walcheren in 1809. He became a Major in the 12th Light Dragoons on 10th December 1812. He served in the Peninsula campaign from February 1813. On the 18th June 1815 Major J. P. Bridger who was second in command of the regiment, took part in a charge at the battle of Waterloo under Colonel Ponsonby. After returning from the charge the regiment was re-formed under Captain Stawell and due to the severe loss of men it was found necessary to form just two squadrons from the original 3. Major Bridger whose charger had been killed, procured another horse and assumed the command of the regiment. Due to his bravery at the battle of Waterloo Major James Paul Bridger was constituted companion of the Bath and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as mentioned in the London Gazette of 1st July 1815. He died in May 1841. The sword is in very well used condition showing some rusting, the blade is etched on both sides for most of its length with a small panel that reads" J. P. BRIDGER. MAJOR. 12 LD." Guaranteed to be completely authentic. Ref 1213.
