Stock Status: Sold Out

A very scarce American Civil War era U.S. government issued Colt Dragoon .44 calibre percussion revolver. Circa 1851. Marked ADDRESS SAM L COLT NEW-YORK CITY on top of the barrel. The government markings of a small U.S. stamped just below COLTS PATENT on the side of frame. The Texas Ranger and Indian fight scene still clearly visible on the cylinder. The serial numbers (all matching except the cylinder) dictate that this is a Third model Colt dragoon. The serial numbers dates it to 1851. The style of the Dragoon with square back trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stop slots with tiny arched guide grooves, identifies this Dragoon as a second model. Colt would use some of the production parts left over from the predecessor model. Some of the serial numbers also over-lapped between the 2nd and 3rd model.  Overall length approx 14 inches. Good crisp action. The Colt Dragoon was another design by famed American gunsmith Samuel Colt. The Dragoon was intended to full-fill a US Army requirement for their U.S. mounted Rifles brigade, thus giving them the title of Dragoons, soldiers trained to fight on horseback or on foot. The Colt Dragoon was put to good effect in the American Civil War (1861-1865) as both military and civilian forces alike treasured the man-stopping qualities and accuracy of the weapon along with its compactness. In good condition with a few scratches and dings, the cylinder scene still visible. A very rare second model Dragoon?of which only 2700 were produced. Ref 2724.
