A rare antique Winchester .38-56 calibre Lever Action Rifle Model 1886. Manufactured 1889. The 26 inch octagonal barrel engraved on top Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. New Haven. Conn USA. With a full length magazine Buck-horn rear sight with adjustable elevation and front sight with nickel centre. 38-56 W.C.F. stamped on top of the barrel in front of the breech. The back strap is stamped MODEL 1886. Length 45 inches overall. John Browning (1855-1926) designed rifle was granted U.S. Patent 306,557 on October 14, 1884. Between 1883 and 1900 Winchester purchased over 44 different firearms designs from Browning, including the Model 1886 rifles which was very successful for the company, other designs were never produced but were patented to prevent competitors from manufacturing them. Nearly 160,000 Model 1886 rifles were produced. This example is one of the earlier rifles manufactured in 1889, denoted by the serial number. Action in good working order. In good overall condition with a few minor dings and scratches. A good example of the Iconic 1886 Winchester lever action rifle. Ref 3390.
