A superb pair of German .48 cal percussion target pistols by Klawitter of HERZBERG. C.1840. The barrels and the side plates are inlaid with a small gold panel with the makers name Klawwitter - Herzberg. August Franz Klawitter (1824-1893) was the court gun maker for the king of Hannover. The 9 inch octagonal barrels retaining their original brown finish and blade fore-sights. Brass tipped ramrods. The decorative blued butt caps with the serial numbers 1 & 2. Superb decorative trigger guards showing their original deep blue finish. Finely chequered grips. Nice crisp actions. These pistols are in excellent condition retaining most of their original finish. The first shooting clubs were formed by German-speaking people in the 13th century. Membership was limited to men only. At first, bows and wheel-lock muskets were shot from the standing position, but by the 16th century, firearms with rifled barrels were used in public matches. Early club competitions were festive one-shot matches fired at elaborately painted wooden targets. Target gun accuracy improved when gun makers began using new percussion caps in 1825. In 1865, William Frederick (Buffalo Bill Cody) began shooting pistol exhibitions, which did much to promote the sport. Overall length 15 inches. A superb example of a pair of German target pistols. Ref 6773.
