A rare pre-Napoleonic Era French Military Flintlock pistol dating from circa 1777-1815. This pistol was made during the reign of Louis XV1 in the years leading up to the Napoleonic wars and also right in the middle of the American war of Independence (1775-1783). The lock-plate is stamped with a crown over the letter L. indicating the reign of Louis XV1 (1754-1793). The lock is also engraved with the manufacturing arsenal name "St. Etienne". Standard military issue brass butt-cap, trigger guard and frame. Condition is very good with some signs of use. Action works fine. The woodwork in in good well used condition. Complete with a replacement steel ramrod. The steel belt hook is missing as is quite often the case with this model. This model Flintlock pistol is quite rare. Barrel length 7.25 inches. Calibre approx .69 cal. Overall length approx 13.5 inches. Many French manufactured military Flintlocks were imported into the U.S.A. during the 18th & 19th century and it is well documented that this type of weapon was carried extensively in the USA at the time of the Revolutionary wars as well as throughout the Napoleonic Peninsula campaigns in Europe circa 1808-1815. This type of heavy calibre flintlock pistol were carried by the French infantry, naval personnel and cavalry officers during the era of the Napoleonic campaigns of the late 18th-early 19th century, including at the Battle of Waterloo. This pistol could easily have been carried during the American Revolutionary war or indeed at the battle of Waterloo on June 18th 1815. This is one of the most difficult French military pistols to find. Ref 2524.
(The very first American made military flintlock pistols were made in 1799 by North & Cheney and were an exact copy of this French flintlock model 1777. Some of these early French pistols did indeed find their way to the Revolutionary war and many U.S. Martial pistol collectors will be happy to include a French model 1777 pistol as part of the history in their collection.)
