A superb carved German 17thC stag horn powder flask portraying the beheaded Holofernes. The flask depicts Judith and her female servant holding a basket containing the beheaded Holofernes. Judith was a beautiful widow who was in danger of having her home destroyed in the city of Bethulia by Holofernes who was an Assyrian general. The general's desires for Judith enabled her to enter his tent and when the general was overcome with drink and had passed out Judith decapitates Holofernes. Then the 2 women carried the head away in a basket.
