A rare basket hilt Rapier probably English, dating from around the time of the English civil war c.1642-1651. Similar to a Pappenheimer guard. The hilt fitted with a large ovoid fluted pommel. The guard with a double fluted shell-guard. The guard with further internal bars. Steel cross-guard with one down turned and one upturned quillon. The original wooden grip still present but now having lost its original leather covering and grip wire binding. The 32 inch blade with three narrow fullers engraved with the blade makers name (name now unclear). Overall length 40 inches. Some light pitting and general wear to the blade, otherwise in well used good condition. A very nice completely untouched and un-restored early piece. Ref 2986.
