A rare pair of English Flintlock Box-lock pistols made by Smith of London. Circa 1780. Engraved on the side plate Smith and the other side engraved London in a stand of arms. Screw-off barrels & folding triggers. Probably William Smith who had a workshop on Tottenham Court Road from 1752 to 1824. Flat sided walnut grips with a silver shield escutcheon to the butts. Sliding top safeties. London proof marks to the underside of the frames. Both pistols in very good overall condition. Actions in good working order. Overall length 6.25 inches. These are the type of pistols that would have been carried in a pocket or a saddle bag during the late 18th century by an English gentleman, traveller or officer as a personal protection weapon. A fine example of a pair of flintlock boxlock pistols. Ref 3417.
