A rare Bristol City Police .69 calibre flintlock pistol by BARNETT. Circa 1800. The lock Marked with the makers name BARNETT. Thomas Barnett had a workshop in London circa 1778-1822 and made pistols for the police and revenue services. The 9 inch barrel engraved on top BRISTOL CITY POLICE and stamped with London proof marks. In the 18th century law enforcement and policing was left entirely to local initiative. There was no nationally organised police force in Great Britain. Local improvement Acts often included provision for paid watchmen or constables to patrol towns at night, while rural areas had less formal arrangements. By the end of the century, however, it was becoming clear that these local forms of policing, which varied in effectiveness from town to town, were hardly adequate in the sprawling new industrial districts. In the early 19th century some town authorities took the initiative of stepping up their policing arrangements. An Act of Parliament in 1800 enabled Glasgow to establish its own city police force, the first professional police force in Britain. More local Acts established forces in growing areas, such as Rochdale in Lancashire and Bristol which had more than 330,000 inhabitants by 1801. Brass trigger guard, ram-rod pipes and butt cap. Brass tipped wooden ram-rod. Action in good working order. Overall length 15 inches. A small chip in the stock near the butt and a small crack in the wood to the fore end. In worn condition with some dings and scratches during it's working life. Ref 3669.
