A rare Napoleonic era brass Flintlock Blunderbuss
pistol. Circa 1770-1787. The 8 inch brass barrel swelling out at the muzzle to a bore size of almost 1 inch. LONDON engraved to the side plate and the makers name GRIFFIN engraved to the other side-plate. Probably Joseph GRIFFIN who had a workshop in New Bond Street, London circa 1770-1787. The barrel fitted underneath with a spring bayonet and struck with London view and proof marks under the barrel. Wooden side-mounted ramrod. Flat sided wooden grips. Action in working order. Some slight staining to the grip and minor signs of wear and use during it's working life, the spring bayonet not locking out correctly, otherwise in good overall condition. A good example of the type of weapon carried by a gentleman or naval officer during the period of the Napoleonic wars. This maker was also manufacturing pistols at exactly the right time in history for his flintlocks to have been carried overseas by travellers to the Revolutionary wars in the United States Of America circa 1775-1783. These all brass pistols were favoured by naval officers during this era. Overall length approx 13 inches. Ref 4377.
