A very high quality single barrel Flintlock Duelling pistol engraved on the lock-plate in gold with the makers name T. Allport. Thomas Allport had a workshop circa 1807-1851 in Birmingham England. The 10 inch heavy octagonal barrel with a gold touch-hole & two gold bands at the breech. The lock-plate stamped on a gold panel with the makers name T. Allport. Wooden ram-rod fitted with an iron worm to the tip. Finely chequered grip with a silver oval escutcheon to the rear. Fitted with a blued spurred trigger guard and set trigger. In excellent overall condition. Length 16 inches. A duel is an arranged engagement in combat between two people, with matched weapons and in accordance with agreed-upon rules. Duels were fought not so much to kill the opponent as to gain satisfaction that is, to restore one's honour by demonstrating a willingness to risk one's life for it. A fine example of a very high quality traditional British Flintlock Duelling pistol. Ref 3503.
