A good example of a rare American model 1866 .44 calibre rim-fire Winchester rifle, this model was known as the Winchester Musket. Circa 1866. The Winchester factory actually termed these long-barrelled 1866 muskets as infantry rifles because the term musket evoked visions of the unwieldy long barrel, large bore rifles that were produced during the Civil war. Not withstanding this name change, the 1866 musket had the lowest sales of any 1866 and consequently is one of the the rarest models we find today. 27 inch round barrel & magazine tube that stops about 2 3/4 inches from the muzzle allowing this rifle to have a full 17 round capacity. The top of the barrel is marked with the Winchester two line address, New Haven and King's improvement patent dates. Standard musket style rear sight with a fixed front sight. Overall length 46 inches. The first Winchester rifle, the Model 1866 was chambered for the now obsolete rim-fire .44 Henry cartridge. Nicknamed the "Yellow Boy" because of its receiver of a bronze/brass alloy called gunmetal, it was famous for its rugged construction and lever action "repeating rifle" mechanism that allowed the user to fire a number of shots before having to reload. Some minor dings and scratches to the stock otherwise a good example of an 1866 Winchester in very good condition. Action works fine. Ref 3873.
