Brass cross-guard and typical squared matching pommel. The grip of fluted wood probably ebony. Good untouched condition. Total length 29 inches. No scabbard. Frigate.
Naval forces began to carry dirks in the mid 18th century.  Dirks probably first originated with the Danish or British Navy and were carried by many different nationalities over the years. During the era 1770 - 1810, the Officer & Midshipmen strength of the British Royal Navy varied from around three to six thousand men,  Early paintings show naval dirks being worn by both high-ranking Naval Officers as well as Midshipmen. Later on Naval dirks began to be worn by Naval Officers and Midshipmen on dress occasions in place of the sword. Many fighting dirks from the Napoleonic era are found with either a straight double edged blade and sometimes with a curved blade for use in close quarter fighting.
