A fine Remington .41 rim-fire double barrelled over and under Derringer pistol. Circa 1885. Engraved on the top of barrel Remington Arms Co. Ilion. N.Y. The barrels showing a reasonable amount of the original blueing. Chequered grips. Because of its small size and ease of concealment it became very popular by gentlemen who felt the need for a small defensive handgun. It was often carried by gamblers and was also well liked by women who wanted an easily concealable gun that could fit in a fur muff or handbag. Out in the wild west, they filled the need of gamblers of the day and gunfighters who needed a backup hand gun. It was easy to employ from its hidden location in a boot top or vest pocket. According to Capt. Joseph Bourke who was an 1880’s Arizona lawman, who packed as many as ten small derringers secreted on his person at a time. In good condition retaining some of it's original blueing. Good working action. Overall length approx 5 inches. Ref 1870.
