A fine pair of Scottish Highlander's Ram's-horn all metal flintlock belt pistols made by MacLeod. The metal stocks are both completely plain except the locks which are engraved. Lock plates both engraved with the makers name MacLeod. Pistols of this type originated in Scotland, specifically around the village of Doune in Stirlingshire. This became the main place for pistol manufacture in Scotland. In 1647 a refugee Flemish blacksmith named Thomas Caddell settled in Doune and began making these pistols completely out of steel due to the shortage of suitable wood in Scotland. This soon became a family business and was carried on by five generations of this family. During this time Macleod served as an apprentice at the Caddell gun-makers business. The Lock plate engraved with the makers name MACLEOD. These are very rare Highlanders pistols. Round barrels terminating in an octagonal shaped muzzle. Approx .60 calibre. Flat sided metal grips terminating in the traditional rams-horn shaped butts. Showing very little signs of use or wear. Each pistol is complete with a steel ramrod, spring steel belt hook, ball trigger and original steel pricker screwed into each butt. Good condition and working order. This is the type of pistol that would have been carried by a wealthy Scottish Highlander for personal protection and at special occasions wearing the full Highland dress, during the late 18th century. Actions both in good working condition. King George the IVth of England was painted wearing a similar pair of pistols when he visited the Royal Highland pageant in Edinburgh at the invitation of Sir Walter Scott in c.1822. A very scarce pair of authentic Scottish pistols in good untouched condition. Both barrels struck with British proof marks. Length approx 12 inches. Ref 4322. (Allegedly, a pistol made in Doune was possibly the very first weapon fired in the American war of Independence by Major Pitcairn a British soldier in 1775.
