A fine English approx .36 calibre Percussion 6 shot Transitional revolver, complete in its carrying case with accessories. This revolver retaining most of its original case hardened finish as well as most of its original blue. Circa 1845. The pepperbox and transitional pepperbox/revolver were invented during the 1830-1840s and intended for civilian use, but military officers often made private purchases for their own use. James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart (1833-1864) was a U.S. Army officer and later a Major General and cavalry commander for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War (1861-65). In 1857 he was shot in the chest at point blank range with a pepper-box by a Cheyenne warrior, Stuart survived probably due rumour has it, to a very weak powder charge. Decorative engraved side plates, trigger guard, bar hammer and butt cap. Finely chequered wooden grips. 5.5 inch barrel. This pistol contained in its original wooden carrying case with its faded red lining, containing a small size copper powder flask, steel bullet mold, oil bottle, turn-screw and percussion cap tin. Overall length of the pistol 12 inches. The mahogany case measures 13.5 X 6.5 x 2.5 inches. The case partitions are all good. A very fine example of an English percussion Transitional revolver in its original case retaining much of its original blued finish. Ref 3954.
