A very fine large calibre double barrelled percussion Howdah pistol made by WILKINSON LONDON. Circa 1840-1850. The 8 inch barrels engraved along the central rib - Wilkinson London. Possibly Henry Wilkinson who had a workshop at Pall Mall and at High Holborn, London. (1832-1848). Plain brass trigger guard. Brass tipped wooden ramrod. Plain wooden stock in military style fitted with a spring steel belt hook to one side. The butt fitted with a large iron skull-crusher butt-cap. The pistol is in excellent condition showing very little signs of use or wear. The term howdah pistol comes from its use in a Howdah, a large wooden platform and seat, mounted on the back of an elephant. Big-game hunters particularly The British Raj in India used howdahs as a platform for hunting and needed large-calibre side-arms for protection against close quarters animal attacks. British officers later carried them for personal protection and even battlefield use. The early howdah pistols were flintlock designs of similar calibre to the military issue musket and it was not until about 60 years later that percussion models in double barrel configuration were seen. Calibre approx .65 cal. In good working order. Overall length 15 inches. Ref 4384.
