A scarce and high quality English 19th Century Percussion belt pistol made by Towlson of Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. The pistol is fitted with a spring belt hook and a swivel captive rammer. Engraved on the barrel with "TOWLSON. MARLBRO & NEWBURY". (John Towlson gunmaker worked in Marlborough (Wiltshire) 1841-1855 and was the son of Joseph Towlson gunmaker who worked in Newbury, Berkshire). The finely chequered walnut butt fitted with a silver plate escutcheon. Heavy octagonal barrel, length approx 5 inches. Good working order. The barrel stamped underneath with two British proof marks. Action very crisp. Overall length approx 9 inches. Circa 1830-1840. Very good overall condition. This is a good example of a high quality pistol carried for protection during the mid 19th century.
