A superb Austrian single barrelled percussion pistol by Nowotny In Wien. Circa 1840. The 2.5 inch rifled barrel of 11mm calibre. The barrel marked with the name M. Nowotny in Wien. Mathias Nowotny was a famous gunsmith working in Vienna, Austria. In 1836 he started his company in Josefstadt and due to his success soon opened a second shop. He died in 1856 and his widow sold the company to Johann Springer, who had been working for Nowotny as an engraver and gunmsith for 15 years, Springer then later married Nowotny's sister. Highly decorative side plates and drop down folding trigger. The top strap inlaid with a gold letter N and crown, with decorative engraving. Dolphin hammer and rounded bag shaped grip. Excellent crisp action. In excellent overall condition. A superb example of a very high quality pistol made in Vienna Austria, used for personnel protection in the 19th century.
