A Superb and rare silver inlaid English Rapier, dating from around the time of the English civil war c.1642-1651. The guard fitted with a large ovoid pommel bearing some fine silver inlay. The bowl, knuckle guard and quillons also with similar inlay. Large fretted shell guard with panels of pierced decoration and further silver inlay. Steel cross-guards with down turned quillons. Wire bound grip. The 39 inch blade with a central fuller running the full length of the blade. Overall length is much longer than most at 48 inches. The quillon block silver decoration is slightly crooked. Some light pitting and wear with small loss of silver inlay, otherwise in good condition. Although this is not the typical weapon of the American Revolutionary war era it is well known that early rapiers were indeed carried by the very earliest colonists in the Jamestown settlement. Ref 3111.
