A very rare Upper Canada Colt 1851 Navy .36 cal percussion revolver. Circa 1853. The 7.5 octagonal barrel marked ADDRESS.COL: COLT. LONDON. The serial number denotes the year of manufacture as 1853. The naval conflict scene still clearly visible on the cylinder. London proof marks to the cylinder and the side of the barrel. 'Colts patent' stamped on the left side of frame. All matching serial numbers including the wedge. The grip marked to one side with U.C. over B and the number 38. Prior to 1854 the Canadian Military was supplied with arms by the British government but the British military was so heavily embroiled in the Crimean War that they were hard pressed to maintain their own military forces and therefore asked Canada to become more active in supplying their own arms. Canada accepted and in 1855 a commission was sent to England to purchase arms. Colt offered to supply .36 calibre 1851 Navy Colts for the price of 2 pounds and 10 shillings. The Canadian military bought 800 Colt Model 1851 Navy revolvers with 556 going to Upper Canada, the area of Canada now known as the Province of Ontario and 255 being issued to Lower Canada, the area known today as the Province of Quebec. The guns were supplied in two shipments of 400, with the first group arriving in May of 1856 and the second group arriving in November of that year. Those in Lower Canada where marked with L.C. and those in Upper Canada with the letters U.C. over the letter of the Company and the number of volunteers in each company. Action in good working order. Some very minor dings and scratches during it's working life otherwise in good condition. Overall length 13.5 inches. A rare opportunity to acquire one of these rare Colt Navy revolvers marked with Upper Canada. Ref 4612.
