Cased Colt model 1851 London Navy .36 cal percussion revolver. Ref 9872

Stock Status: In Stock

A rare Cased Colt model 1851 London Navy .36 calibre percussion revolver. Manufactured in 1852. The six inch blued barrel marked {ADDRESS. COL. COLT LONDON}. All matching serial numbers. This Colt Model 1851 navy revolver was supplied by Samuel Colt’s London factory in 1852, (the serial number denotes the year of manufacture) this was the only other Colt factory outside the United States of America. Colt received many famous visitors and would personally give them a guided tour. They included Prince Albert (Queen Victoria's husband) and the famous author Charles Dickens. Dickens was very impressed by the factory and working conditions and stated "It is the only place in England where one can see the complete manufacture of a pistol, from dirty pieces of timber and rough bars of cast steel, till it is fit for the gunsmiths case". Dickens was even invited to test one of Colt's .36 calibre revolvers. His opinion was "After a little practise, I find that a mere novice may, with one hand, discharge the six rounds as rapidly as the eye can wink". Colt's revolvers were sold mainly in the United States of America as well as being retailed in London England. Complete in its original wooden case (15 X 7 inches) and its original green baize lining with a L-shaped nipple wrench, G & W Hawksley Sheffield bag shaped flask, pewter oil bottle and a London cap tin. Good crisp action. This revolver has a low serial number 13967 and since there were only 42,000 manufactured, makes this revolver a rare item especially being cased. In very good condition overall retaining much of it's original finish. Ref 9872.
