A scarce double Barrelled Tap Action Flintlock Pistol, made by J. WHITEHOUSE of West Bromwich, circa 1808-1809. Fitted with a folding bayonet under the barrells. Both side plates engraved in script with the maker's name J. WHITEHOUSE on one side and West Bromwich on the other side. (John Whitehouse had a gunsmiths workshop at 18 Bath Street, Birmingham circa 1783-1843.) Very fine chequered walnut grips, both barrels screw off. Floral decoration engraved on the trigger guard. the breech stamped underneath with two proof marks. Good condition and in working order. Overall length 11 inches with the bayonet extended. A nice example of the type of double barrelled pistol carried for personal protection at the end of the 18th century and a very scarce maker. Ref 4296.
