Stock Status: In Stock
A rare antique Scottish Ram's horn all metal Highlander's flintlock pistol made by the Scottish gunsmith DANIEL ROSS of EDINBURGH. Lock plate engraved ROSS. Barrel engraved on top EDINBURGH. The brass butt engraved with thistles to both sides. Ross was a gunsmith in Scotland from 1815 to 1839 and became famous for donating the ROSS fountain on display in Scotland. Daniel Ross was a rather eccentric man, he was known as Old Daniel, a well known gun-maker and philanthropist, Born in 1791, he had a workshop at South Hanover Street, Edinburgh 1815- 1839. In 1862 he purchased a fabulous fountain that was produced at the iron foundry of Antoine Durenne in Sommevoire, France for £2,000. It was transported to Leith in 1869 in 122 pieces and was installed in the West Princes Street Gardens in 1872. Sadly Ross would never see his gift to the city completed as he died in 1871. He also became well known for making this type of all metal Scottish Highlander's pistol. Round barrel approx 6 inches long, terminating in a fluted muzzle. With its correct steel ramrod, bore approx .52 cal. Flat sided typical grips engraved with thistle motifs to each side. Showing hardly any signs of use or wear. Complete with its original spring steel belt hook, ball trigger and original steel pricker screwed into the butt. Good condition and working order. This is the type of pistol that would have been carried by a wealthy Scottish Highlander for personal protection and at special occasions wearing the full Highland dress, during the 19th century. Action in good working condition. King George the 4th of Great Britain was painted wearing a similar pistol when he visited the Royal Highland pageant in Edinburgh at the invitation of Sir Walter Scott in 1822. A very scarce Scottish pistol with fine engraving and in good untouched condition with all parts original. Ref 3743.
